Suicheng Relics is located in Suicheng Village, 10 kilometers west of Xushui County. It faces Puhe River and the Yan Great Wall on the north. It is the most important city relics along the Yannan Wall.

Suicheng town was initially built during the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring State Period. Shi Ji. Yan Zhao Gong Shi Jia says, “In 12, Li Mu of the Zhao State attacked the Yan Stated, breached Wusui and Fangcheng.” Nanyingzhou was established there in the Northern Wei Dynasty. In the Sui Dynasty it was renamed Suicheng County. It was under Yizhou government in the Liao troops here several times. Suizhou was established here by the Jin State. And it was incorporated into Ansu County (today’s Xushui County) in the Ming Dynasty. The wall and embankment we see today were built in the Song Dynasty. As for the present wall, the north and east sections are become dilapidated. The west section of the south wall as well as the west wall has been well preserved. The solid wall is made of tamped-earth. Moat between the wall and the embankment had been transformed into a long narrow low-lying land. Inside the relics, 14 ancient tombs that were built in the Han, Northern Wei and Sui Dynasties have been excavated. Many precious unearthed cultural rellics such as pottery jar, plate and table, porcelain dish, crystal bead, amber, turquoise and Pankou vase have been found. Suicheng Relics possesses a long history. Yang Yanzhao, the famous general achieved brilliant military successes at the country. At that time Yang was stationed in Suicheng city. The small and weakly defended border town was severely attacked. And besiege continued for many days. Yang assembled all the able-bodied young men to guard the city. It was bitterly cold in the winter. Yang ordered the soldiers to water the town wall. Solid ice cover formed within one night, the enemy troops could not climb nor walk on the slippery surface. They could do nothing but retreat. In this way Yang and his soldiers defeated the enemy and captured many arms. This is the famous “Battle in the Icetown” In the same year; Qidan troops invaded the border again. Yang and his soldiers waited in ambush on Yangshan Hill west of the county. They defeated the enemy from the rear, and captured the enemy general. Because of this feat, Yang was promoted to be Bao Zhou Tuan Lian and stationed in Suicheng. During the anti-Liao war Suicheng city had never been breached. That’s why people praise it as the Iron-forged Suicheng.Wen Tianxiang; the famous national hero in the Southern Song Dynasty was once captured and sent back to Dadu under the Yuan troop’s escort. On his way he passed by Suicheng Relics and wrote two poems about it named “Deng Wusuicheng” and “Wusui Dao Zhong” .
